Apparently, some 43 people entered the Canadian Embassy here in Beijing seeking Asylum. News reports suggest “at least some” were North Korean, but I imagine all were. This is a nice embarassment to the Chinese security forces who guard the Embassies - as articles stated, they have erected barbed wire fences around (most) embassies over the past 2 years or so - an eye sore, but understandable. The Canadian Embassy is technically in the Sanlitun Embassy district, of which I passby almost every day. If memory serves me correctly, I think the Embassy doesn’t have those ugly barbed wire fences surrounding it, but I assume that is because the embassy has a decent wall with metal spikes almost 3 meters high. I am pretty impressed with the asylum seekers for getting over the wall with only one being caught, not too bad. You can bet, however, that the embassy will soon get the ugly barbed wire fences, and maybe a few guards with machine guns, like what the US embassy has. News Article
